Getting your book cover dimensions wrong on Amazon KDP is one of the most frustrating and avoidable publishing mistakes — and it happens constantly. Here's the definitive 2026 reference guide for every major trim size and format.
The Golden Rule: Cover = Interior Size + Spine + Back Cover
Your book cover isn't just the front image. It's a single, continuous file that wraps around the entire book: back cover + spine + front cover. The dimensions change based on your chosen trim size AND your page count (which determines spine width).
KDP Spine Width Formula
For black-and-white interior pages: page count x 0.0025 inches = spine width
For color interior pages: page count x 0.0028 inches = spine width
Example: A 250-page black-and-white book has a spine of 0.625 inches.
Common Trim Size Cover Dimensions
| Trim Size | Front/Back Width | Height | Bleed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5" x 8" | 5.125" each | 8.25" | 0.125" per side |
| 5.5" x 8.5" | 5.625" each | 8.75" | 0.125" per side |
| 6" x 9" (most popular) | 6.125" each | 9.25" | 0.125" per side |
| 7" x 10" | 7.125" each | 10.25" | 0.125" per side |
| 8.5" x 11" | 8.625" each | 11.25" | 0.125" per side |
Total file width = (2 x cover width) + spine width. Always add 0.125" bleed on all three outer edges.
Resolution Requirements
KDP requires a minimum of 300 DPI (dots per inch) for all print cover files. 300 DPI at your final physical dimensions is non-negotiable for professional print quality. Images downloaded from the internet are typically 72-96 DPI and will print blurry at book size.
For Kindle eBook Covers
Kindle cover requirements are different from print: 2,560 x 1,600 pixels minimum, with a 1.6:1 height-to-width ratio recommended. JPG or TIFF format. The cover file for Kindle is just the front cover — no spine or back cover needed.
Use KDP's Cover Creator or a Professional Designer
KDP offers a free Cover Creator tool with templates. This is adequate for a basic book but rarely produces a cover that stands out competitively. For a professional result, use a cover designer who understands KDP's exact specifications — or work with Hafiz Publications, where cover design is included in our full publishing packages.
